Without hauling my Hunter ("Gemini") to make an accurate assessment of what's what concerning her steering system, it appears to me that somehow the top rudder bearing has broken and probably has slid down the ruddershaft, leaving us to endure sailtips of pleasure and aggrivation -- especially on reaches. I've looked on the net till my eyes have bled, even contacting Hunter Marine trying to find a mechanical drawing with shaft o.d. measurments and the i.d. of the collar, and any other technical information, so I can avoid ruining her paint by having her out of the water too long. (To no avail.) Has anybody out there experienced the same problem with their steering system or does anyone have a remedy? By the way...it's too cold to dive. Thanks, Wes Fowler Seabrook, Texas

What exactly are the symptoms?

Wes, What are the symptoms of your steering problems? I have my 26.5 on the trailer next to my house and may be able to take the rudder / tiller assembly apart and get you some measurements and photos. I have been looking for an excuse to take the rudder off anyway. I have an annoying little vibration that comes on at 4 knots that I think is related to the plastic bushing under the top cap of the rudderpost. Send me an e-mail at svwalkabout@hotmail.com and maybe we can get your problem figured out. Regards, Clayton S/V Walkabout

Hunter 26.5 rudder

I have a 1987 Hunter 26.5 on a trailer in my driveway and I have the rudder out right now. I can measure the shaft and the bearings for you if you want. I replaced the top bearing years ago and still have the original bearing. I made the new one larger for more support. If you want, you can e-mail me at btarnick@att.net
