After 1300 hours on my M25 diesel, I think I should consider replacing the exhaust pipe from manifold to muffler. Are these available, if I made my own would stainless steel be okay? Any help would be appreciated.

I just replaced mine on an M18

I posted a similar questions and got quite a few responces. Of course the easy way out would be to buy one like Stu suggested. You could also make one for a fraction of the cost. Stainless might be prone to cracking due to heating and cooling. Galvanized plumbing is not the way to go either due to harmfull gasses given off as the galvanized metal heats. Black iron plumbing seems the way to go. I removed my pipe (which had already split in two) and took both pieces to a local plumbing supply and asked them to match it up. The cost was less than $25. The exhaust wrap you can usually get from any automotive or performance shop. Some call it header wrap. I used 10 ft and it cost a little more than a buck a foot. The link below is to Marine Diesel Direct if you need gaskets or anything. Good luck!

1988 C30 Exhaust Replacement

I too have a 1988 cat 30 with 1300 hours and I just replaced the tube in question this week. I read concerns about stainless and asked several pro marine diesel mechanics here. Both said stainless was the way to go. Unbolted the tube (a lot easier than I expected) and took it to a local marine fabricator, two days later, nice tube, rewrapped and ready to install. Admittedly more expensive than $25 but I hope to have it done for a good long while. BTW, if you do not want to drain the entire engine coolant, just drain the manifold (little plug on lower rear of manifold) before replacing the gasket.
