I have a 1988 28.5 with the holding tank under the aft (port) berth. There is a manual pump out located in the aft starboard locker but thus far I have not been able to find a manual valve leading to a thru-hull. Any ideas?

Maybe there isn't one

To legally dump a tank overboard, you must be 3 miles offshore--not just 3 miles from the nearest shore in a bay, lake or sound, but 3 miles out to sea from the nearest point on the whole U.S. coastline or any offshore islands that are part of a state. So if the boat was delivered to a dealer that's not on coastal waters, it's possible no thru-hull and seacock exist.

Doesn't make sense.

John: It does not make much sense that there is a manual pump and no discharge outlet for the tank. If you follow the hose from the pump you should be able to locate a thru hull. There should be two of them. A smaller 3/4" for the raw water intake and the larger 1 1/2" discharge hose. They are usually low on the hull. Check in the head under the sink and aft of where the pump is located.

It doesn't have to make sense...

A previous owner may have installed the pump as an emergency manual bilge pump, not a tank pump. Less likely: there was a thru-hull...it's been glassed over, but the pump left to serve as an emergency manual bilge pump, or somebody was too lazy to take it out. Not likely, but not impossible (I've seen a lot of things just as nutty): a previous owner installed the pump before figuring out there's no thru-hull and left it there. So it IS possible there is no thru-hull...not everything has to make sense.

I've got one

John, I have a 1987 Hunter 285 and my thru-hull valve is under a small removable floor in the lazerette. As soon as you climb down into the lazerette (using the small foot pad on the bulk head) don't move! Face the bow and get on your knees. My boat has a removable floor where the exhaust hose passes through on it's way aft. Lift that flooring up (it maybe a little difficult since the hose is passing through it) and under it you may find the thru-hull fitting. I sail the bay and of course no dumping is allowed. So I have plans to remove the hose that goes to the fitting, the manual pump (going to convert that to a manual bilge pump), the "y" valve and cap off the thru-hull fitting. I'm a ways from the open ocean so I don't see a need to have the waste system set up like it is right now. Besides, if I do make it to the open ocean someday, I'll not be out there long enough to dump over. But if a future owner wants to he/she will still have the thru-hull fitting to use. Plus if I ever get the crazy thought of installing a built in AC, I'll have a fitting to use as the water intake. I think it's very important that you find the fitting or at least prove to yourself that it may have been glassed over, which I doubt. Bob

Agree with Bob

I have a 88 28.5 and my thru hull is located in the same place as Bob described. I converted this to an emergency bilge last winter. Anyway, just lift up the floor board farthest forward in your starboard lazarette. I'm sure it is there. Happy Sailing, Ken Matejka
