We have a 1987 Yanmar 3GM30F (24hp) on our boat. We just got the boat and there was no spare oil on the boat, so we have no idea what kind of oil has been used in the boat all these years. We would like to keep using the same kind of oil that the engine is "used to". I know that in newer engines, folks use multi-weight oil, but not for the older engines - correct? What would everyone guess would be the most likely type of oil used in a boat of this vintage that has always been kept in Virginia in the Chesapeake Bay its entire life. I know to use diesel engine oil (CD) and would guess 30 weight - maybe 40? (too heavy?) for the Mid-Atlantic. Any thoughts?

You are correct

Manual says Type CD - 30W (not multiviscosity). There is a very recent thread that addresses this.

Yanmar Oil

Use 15W40 oil API CD or later. I don't think you can find CD anymore so use CF or CG. The later the second letter the newer the oil(better). All auto or marine stores carry them. The C stands for diesel and the S stands for auto.
