Do anyone know if the interior vent is supposed to vent to the outside. I though it vented through the two cowlings on the roof, but when I opened up the interior plate to clean it is sealed with the original fiberglass mold. Did they forget to cut the holes? Attached is the cover plate.

My 85 vents to the dorades. Many folks have installed computer fans boost the efficiency of the system

Should have a hole in the top of the molding behind the wood cover.. Here is a shot of a 31 without the cover on and you can see where the hole is in the molding just aft of the hatch. (shot was from a forum member, don't remember who, sorry) The dorades both connect to this hole into the cabin, so they should be faced the same direction. If you decide to cut the hole, the clearance above the molding is kinda short. The hole saw should have MINIMAL pilot drill length or you'll poke a hole in the top cover.
The picture from below is the one in my 34 which is very similar to the 31.
EDIT: some had three holes .. I have considered cutting a couple more to aid the weak ventilation.

Thanks that helps a lot. I will need to cut a hole in the top, because I get bad condensation inside my boat. Appreciate the pictures. I like to know what's behind the fiberglass while I'm drilling.

I hadn't thought of that, but not sure how comfortable I am punching a hole in plexiglass without breaking it.

After some research I think in the south I need solar vents in my boat. The condensation is bad!!!

Go slow, light pressure. 1/4" drill bit then use a hole saw with 1/4" smooth rod as the pilot and cut in reverse. Make sure the hole saw is 1/4" pilot or adjust directions to the proper size. Usually works like a charm. If you can resharpen the original bit to a very low angle as if drilling stainless it should be trouble free.

I was nervious about that also but bit the bullet and installed my Nicro vent by cutting with a sabre saw after taping up the plexiglass and drilling a pilot hole. Cleaned up the edges with a very fine round file. Worked out fine for me.

I keep me boat in the Kemah area in Texas. We have two solar vents, one in the center hatch and one venting in the head. Condensation has never been a problem. I think you are wise to do it.
