Part of the starting system on my 1986 Nissan 5 hp motor broke in August. Everything else on the motor works great, so I've been looking for a replacement since then. Nissan doesn't make this part any more, and no one I've contacted has one, so I'm turning here for suggestions, or maybe the part. It's a ratchet, part number 33805-0030M. There's enough of it left so that if I had a picture, I might be able to have a machinist make one up. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Tohatsu engine.

Craig: Those engines are mfg. by Tohatsu. They made engines for many different companies under different lables so I would check around. You may find them as Nissan, Mercury & Tohatsu that I can remember. It is a little hard to believe that a part like this is not longer available in less than 20 years.

It's true

I couldn't believe they stopped making it either, but I heard the same thing from everyone I called or emailed across the country. It's a $3.67 part, but without it I'm out of luck.

Is that legal?

If it was a tractor, all parts are available forever. But man are they expensive. Same thing with Yanmars. Car manufacturers by law, only have to supply parts for seven years. But that was under the Democrats. Now it's probably 18 months or when the warranty runs out, which ever is first. :(

Fred,

two questions: 1. What size mainsail does a tractor carry? 2. On what planet does 1986 + 7 = 2004?

Bill, good points

You know, my tractor would have about a 30sq ft square rigged sail mounted inside the roll over protection bar. As far as the seven year limit, I was just venting against repub,,,Can I say that here? *o

Free Market

Most of this is dictated by the free market. The manufacturers make little money off of replacement parts as do the after market people. They have to keep a low volume assembly line open. They have a couple of considerations. What is it doing to their public relations? i.e. Will it affect future sales? The other is purely economic. They can make more money off of their assetts by building new products. I prefer the free market system. What happens otherwise is that either the prices go up because they are making products which do not sell well or they go out of business. Your choices then becomes either go out and buy a $1000 plus new motor, a $500 plus new part or not being able to buy that motor at all. The government can do a lot of things, but they can't require someone to remain in business. Pretty much the same thing has happened with the Eveinrude/Johnson motors. There are a lot of used parts, but they can be hard to find.

Fred,

Can you point me to the location where the law says that manufacturers have to maintain inventory for "18 months or until the warranty runs out, whichever comes first."? I'd like to have a look at it to determine its origin, impact on the aftermarket service industry and how long its been in force.

i'm looking for that part too

if thats the nylon pawl that engages the flywheel when you yank the starter. mine works but i want a spare made from brass and it is NLA at ITG Marine, (800-321-1902).....they've found every other part for my 86 nissan 5hp tho. i am considering having a local machine shop make me one or possibly try to make one myself. its a pretty simple looking piece. a gunsmith with an end mill could make one easily and if i, or my local machinc shop cant do it i'll turn to my gunsmith buddy....(if i want to wait a year:{). e mail me at: williamrd@attglobal.net and whoever finds one first let the other know where or how they got it. i may get energetic today and go get my motor out of the shed and take the part out.....did you say you need a picture?

William, That's the one. At least yours is whole! If you could send me a picture, that would be great. I have all but the end that engages the flywheel, but can't tell what the length and shape should be. The husband of someone I work with makes medical devices and she thinks he can make one up. The machine shop is another alternative, provided I can show him what it looks like. I'll let you know if one of these alternatives works. Craig
