I need to replace the original traveler at the entrance of the companion-way. How are the screw attached? Bolts or wood block. Underneath is the ceiling fiberghlass liner of the main cabin with no openings for removingt the rail?? Access Ports ...

My boat ('87 Legend 35) has inspection ports installed directly below the traveller bolts. These inspection ports may have been added by a previous owner. Either way, they provide convenient access to the bolts and look reasonably clean and tidy on the ceiling of the head liner.

Try one and see!

Yep Hunters are a real pain to work on for some things. Try unscrewing one of the bolts. If they have wood screw threads then you are golden and just have to be carefull putting it back together and not stripping the holes. Course a travler mounted with wood screws is kinda dumb. More likely they are machine screws and the nuts are either cast into a fiberglass block or just loose on a backing plate. Either way you don't have any way to get to them except (gasp) cut an inspection port in the headliner. On my H L 37 the jib sheet lead track had the nuts where you could get to them except for 3 which were inside fiberglass stringers. The bolts where just run into the stringer material and that was that. Kinda scarry but they did tighten up. Oh yea, don't bother looking for a philips head screw driver that fits those bolts. They are a size 5 and the biggest anybody makes is a 3.

If you buy an impact driver set

if comes with a # 5 Phillips that fits in anm adapter (included) that is 1/2" drive for a ratchet. They are in the tool section of many discount stores, or your hardware store should carry it for a little more.

Anchor plates

Hunter usually puts aluminum plates into the fiberglass. This precludes the need to through bolt with backing plates. If the hardware is machine screws, they are more than likely set into aluminum plates glassed into the deck. To install new hardware, drill the fiberglass and aluminum plates, then run a tap through the plate to set the fasteners.
