I have 1986 Hunter Legend 40 with a Meriman Pedestal. The trottle cable his bent/broken due to faulty installation. It appear that the cable must have been changed more then once in the past. I do not trust the length of the cable I have on the boat. Also I do not trust the way it was installed. At the moment I have: - Shifter cable on Port side with cable coming up in front (on bow side) of rudder chain. - Trottle cable on starboard side has cable coming up aft of the rudder chain. Could you tell me: - What is the length (and possibly serial number) of the trottle cable on this specific boat? - Can I find somewhere a drawing/sketch of the installation of the trottle and shifter cable on this particular pedestal? A prompt answer would be appreciated because the cable need to be ordered to the correct length and the boat is sitting unused at the moment. Different Pedestal But

The cable on my 1985 H-40 was bent at the end of the casing by the shifter in the pedestal. It was caused by not having a proper stop on the shifter. So when you pushed to hard it bent the cable around the bottom of the shift handle inside the pestal once bent the cable quit going back into the casing making it impossible to shift. Of course it all jammed up while turning around in the middle of a river. Any way in my case the exact length of the cable was not important but putting a screw in the housing to act as a shift stop addressed the bending problem on the new caqble I installed. By the way I went out several times while figuring the whole thing out. By placing crew down by the shifter on the trasmission and yelling. I think we were in and out of the slip at least six times without a mishap. Kevin S/V Katawa Cay

1986 40' Legend cable problem

Flavio, I have just been thru the same process in a '86 Legend 40. Since I had to be out of town moving another boat, I hired the cable replacement done. We used a better grade cable that is capable of making tighter turns, and had to relocate the connection to the transmission linkage. The original, as I found it, would not work. The shifter connection at the pedistal was bent also. As soon as I get the invoice, I will let you know the length of cables. The connections and routing through the pedistal are not easy. I decided to replace both cables, although nothing was wrong with the throttle, because the cable is the cheapest part. Didn't want to have a problem with it later.

Shift & Throttle both fwd

Hi Flavio, Good luck with MXBay. On WINDROSE (a 1987, hull #217) both the shift and throttle cables run together through an opening in the Merriman cast pedestal base. The opening is forward of the steering cable (yes, cable, not chain) opening and penetrates the cockpit sole. I'd guess cable length isn't critical and you can take up quite a bit with the throttle adjustment. Earlier this season we had to adjust the shift cable for the first time since we bought WINDROSE in 1996. Cables stretch with time. By way of identifying what we have, both the shift and throttle cables are jacketed with a red plastic. Wonder if that is the same as MXBay. We too have shift port and throttle stbd. I had not seen any part numbers on the cables. Cables run next to each other through the pedestal base, aft through a channel in the cabin overhead, down through the aft locker benind the berth, under the berth, and then under the cabin sole in the vicinity of the stuffing box. They are tied off with wire ties to keep them isolated from the steering cable. I actually added an additional tie to keep one of them (i.e., one of the red plastic covered control cables) from being abraided by the steering cable. Of course it's important to keep the bend radii as generous as possible We'll be down on the boat later in the week. Is there anything else I should inspect and report back to you? We could take a few photos of the routing and e-mail them to you. If you'd like more info, please send an e-mail directly or give us a call. Carl & Sue

Hunter 40-1986 same problem with y/s stand

I have a hunter 40 1986 with a Y/S pedestal with the same problem. I have just had the trans compleatly rebuilt and a new shift cable install. The first time we try to shaft lever the cable brace inside of the pestial slip. I reajusted the cable and retighten same. Try the shift lever again and the cable bent. The engine mechanic dose not know wye this is happing.I have a Yaanmar 4JIIE 44 hp motor. Any tips on this on this would be glady accepted. THANKS

Shift cables

The problem you are describing sounds like it could be related to the relationship between the Yanmar engine/tranmission and the Morse shifter control used on many Hunter sailboats. If your transmission is a direct mechanical shift (does not have a cone clutch)the force required to shift is sufficient to bend/warp the shift cable. According to the engineers at Morse the shifter and cable assembly was never designed for such loads. The Hunter factory denies there is any problem. I suspect there are many Hunter owners out there with shifter problems but haven't gone to the time and expense of finding out why. Check it out.
