Hello, I am just learning to sail, and recently (today) bought a 1986, 22' Catalina swing keel. I am very new to sailing and hoping that there is an owner's manual, or some sort of instruction manual, that covers the features of the boat, how to put up the mast, raise and lower the keel,recommended maintenance, etc, etc... Does something like this exist, and if so where can I get it? Thanks very much!

Hydro1: You will find this forum most helpful. As a new sailor, please take sailing lessons or at least instructions from an experienced C22 sailor. When I started sailing, I thought (wrongly) that I didn't need lessons. A sailor experienced in a small (Lazer ?) boat & his wife took me out for instructions in my newly acquired C22. To make a long story short, we were out in extreme wind with foam blowing off the tops of the white caps & we broached. All three of us were propelled over the life lines & ended up in the water. The sails were flat in the water & with a little help by reaching up & pulling on the keel, the boat came back up. The sheets were still cleated so the boat took off with only 2 people in the boat. They had trouble getting the main down & getting the motor started before coming back for me. Please have respect for the weather as it could mean your life! Regards from Canada.

Hi Hydro 1 One thing missing in the 1987 Catalina 22 Owners Manual is the length of the Swing Keel cable length. If it is there in the Manual I didn't see it. The Swing Keel cable 7x19 ss 3/16" and 10 feet long with a ss Aircraft fork 3/16" wire, 5/16"p sweged on the end. I had mine made at a Chandlery for $10 less than Catalina Direct. Fair Winds AL

Definitely taking lessons
Thanks for the welocome, I'm going to take lessons with a local sailing club associated with the ASA, they teach the Keel Boat Certification on C22s; in the meantime though I hope to learn about the boat by going carefully going through it and cleaning and repairing as I go. But I don't even know where to begin, is there a good manual or any advice on what systems, or parts of the boat are important to inspect and what to look for that might need repairs? The boat has been in freshwater its whole life, and I understand that can be problem for swing keels.
