1986 31 Exhaust

Was helping a friend diagnose the lack of flow from his exhaust today and found that everything works fine up to the exhaust muffler that's built into the boat in the SB cockpit locker. Hoses are clear, pump is pumping.

Is this something that is generally cut out and replaced or would you recommend he install a standalone waterlift muffler? Has anyone had a similar problem that they fixed that can give us some tips?

I just put in a stand alone water lift top in top out 8 inch round and attached to the top of old one , works great and quieter also.
