Ok, same boat of previous thread...
This is part of the ad:
Mechanical
"Yanmar marine diesel engine needs fuel pump, injectors, governor. Transmission cable connector needs replacement. Throttle cable bad."
How expensive would this be (done at a marina)
I need fast answers... Time is against me
Thx to all

Too much….

I don’t know if this boat is priced as a deal of the century or someone unloading a problem on you.

A fuel pump isn’t too much (you can use an electric one instead of the mechanical one). But if it the high-pressure pump, that is a whole other story…

Here are some prices in my area…

injector $225 each plus little bits (washers, banjo bolts if needed, etc.
fuel feed pump $115 for manual on-engine pump

I couldn’t find a price for the Governor or a high-pressure pump.

Hard to say how much the labor would be for a mechanic. You aren’t going to pull the engine out I would imagine, so the mechanic is not going to be real efficient…

How much is the average marina price to overhaul lets say this engine?

I dont know…and I don’t know what engine you have. Maybe a 2GM20F? Common engine for 30-footers.

You could buy a used or rebuilt one for $3-4K, but installation would probably add a grand or 2…just a guess.

do you know the story on the engine? No way to check compression, or even turn it over, let alone start it in the current condition….sounds a bit scary to me.

OK... The engine according to a PRACTICAL SAILOR review of the boat itself is a:
Yanmar 2GMF 13-hp. diesel...
Now how much aproximadately give or take, ball park figure... Would be to overhaul such engine.

The going shop rates for boat yards is $125-150 per hour. If all goes well you have 2-3 days of labor.

There 2 fuel pumps. The lift pump and injection pump. The lift pump is held on with 2 nuts. Easy swap out if the nuts come off. As boat parts go. Not too expensive, depends on the pump. The injector pump is a different story. They are expensive and not easy to replace correctly.

control cables are about $50 each, plus labor to install.

At least the ad is being honest.

The engine according to a PRACTICAL SAILOR review
Based on your questions and then this statement I would be on shaky ground.

What Practical Sailor says, or for that matter what the owner/broker states may not be the engine actually in the boat. To value the work needed to do the repairs listed, you need to inspect the engine and verify the Name, Model, and Serial number. Replacement parts can be specific.

It has been my experience that if you are in a rush chasing a deal you may not be getting a good deal.

Hey,

Worst case would be around $5K. But there are way too many unknowns to come up with an accurate number.

I'd like to know how it was determined that the fuel pump, injectors, and governor are bad.

Does the engine run at all?

I can see a fuel pump OR the fuel injectors OR the governor going bad, but all three and all at the same time? That seems very strange and suspect to me. Perhaps there was a large amount of water in the fuel and that ruined all of the components in the fuel system? In that case I would worry about the fuel tank and fuel lines as well.

For the amount of damage on this engine, there's just not enough difference between a professionally rebuilt engine and this one you find yourself looking at.

It's the damage you don't know about that will cost you big time.

I'd bet the engine don't run and "fuel pump, injectors and governor" is someone's guess as to why. The only time I had a bad injector pump (on a Perkins) the "white gloved mechanical technician" removed it for transport to "The Lab" for rebuilding and "calibration". Don't sound cheap does it ?

Injectors can be re-built. Did so on my Universal M12 in 1995 after previous owner overheated engine and coked them up. Sent them to Yankee Diesel and they came back like new, now running perfectly ever since. The rest of your list I don't know about, but it sounds like caution is the watchword here.

Got the boat for $2100 at auction(charity auction) Meet the previous owner, $$$guy he doesn't have time right now for the boat, the engine went bad(no details)
The radar dish on the boat is $1700.00 so if i get to replace or rebuild the engine I believe I'm still on the good side of things.

As soon the boat gets to the marina in Florida I'm gonna have mechanic check things up and see what he determines (repair or replacement) I got the boat for $2100 at auction and the survey was very good, besides the engine situation.
