I am a new 1985 Hunter 25.5 owner, and was wondering how to keep the pop-top in the up position. I have tryed raising the top, but the rocking motion of the waves causes it to come crashing back down hard. Is there some kind of lock or latch I should be looking for to keep it locked up? I asked the former owner, but he said he never raised it. Any help would be appreciated.

Pop-top hardware

Take a look at the mast track below the boom. There should be a small stainless hook on a slide in the track with a hand screw friction lock. The hook fits under the forward end of the top to hold the thing up while the screw keeps the hook from sliding down. If it is missing, contact Hunter and try to find a replacement, but you may have to remove some of the mast hardware to get it into the track.

I agree with the previous response...

But I have one more piece of information. The top is not designed to be in the up position while underway. Hey, have fun with the boat. I have the same model and year and we love her. s/v Elan '85 25.5

I lift my pop-top only while at anchor. I installed an eyebolt thru the pop-top housing using marine goop (you can get at any hardware store.) installed a small cleat on the mast and tied a 1/4 nylon line about two feet long. So when the pop-top is up I tie the line to the mast cleat. Still have to be careful with small children climbing around it. It's a design problem. If it falls someone could get hurt.
