I purchased our 1985, 27 from the original owner. Why are there no backing plates on any of the through deck components, (cleats, winches, stanchons and stern rails)? I noticed this when conducting an annual inspection and tightening opd all fastners and when the bow cleat loosened and I had to tighten it. Was this a manufacturers design decision or a purchase option? Is there a recommended backing plate for these componets? Stainless, wood, etc. Are they available as stock items or are they custom. Where can I source them. Any info would be appriciated. Regards, Gerard

You gotta remember that the 27 was an early Catalina design. They were designed as a "volkswagen" boat, i.e. designed to meet a low price point. I'm surprised the PO hadn't refitted the backing plates necessary, if he owned it many years. The best bet, if you can fit them is stainless backing plates. I don't think any are available as an off-the-shelf refit item from Catalina. Some of the fittings are nearly impossible to put true backing plates on, and you have to use big fender washers to spread the load as much as you can. The 4 bolts on many stanchions for example, have 2 on one side of the hull/deck joint flange, and 2 on thE other. The best you can do unless you grind down the flange is use fender washers. And even some of them you need to cut down or bend over a little. Good luck, and get working!
