Hello, I recently put heavy load on my 1984 Yanmar 6.5HP engine for the first time this year. At higher RPM's around 22000, the engine suddenly lost power, dropping down to 15,000. As you try to get it back up to the higher RPM's its jst drops back down. I've never had this problem. Other than that, the engine seems fine. Any ideas what is causing this problem? Thanks so much, Jason

Slippage

Perhaps the throttle cable is slipping, you may have the ability to adjust with a locking nut ect. The cable on my O'Day 272 came loose a couple of years ago and I used an auto hose clamp to secure it.

Fuel Filter

Check out the condition of the fuel filter. It sounds like it may be starving for fuel. An easy fix if that is the problem. Sean

Also Fuel

In addition to the two previous items, the fuel could be contaminated. Since the boat is an '84 it's very likely there is sluge in the tank which is being picked up and that's why the filter is clogged. A new filter will work but the sluge isn't going to go away unless it's cleaned out. Regular use of a biocide will help keep it at bay. Is the throttle lever moving?

Jason: Is your throttle lever moving? If that is your problem then you can look in the Photo Forum. I posted an few photos about a 'J' clamp that you put on your cable to keep tension on it. Mine works fine since I did this. I am not sure what engine you have but I think that you intended to indicate RPMs as 2200 and 1500. Do you know what engine model you have in your boat?
