Merry Christmas to all sailors!!

I recently purchased a 1984 Hunter 27. After a thorough search of the boat, there is no emergency tiller.

Does anyone have pictures (and ideally, measurements) of the OEM Emergency Tiller than came with the Hunter 27?

I expect I'll have to have one fabricated.

Thanks.

My emergency tiller was located in the cockpit stern locker. There is small compartment on the port side under the floor that has a wooden hatch cover. Your tiller should be located in that compartment. Mine was so rusted that it is unusable. Do a forum search and you should find a lengthy discussion about this topic.

I’ll be at my boat later this week, it‘s a 340, but I’ll take a few photos and measurements so you can get an idea of its design. Can’t imagine it would be to much different for your boat, aside from overall length.
The emergency tiller is also located in a locker in the cockpit. Not the easiest of access either.
Nor is it the easiest to use, but handy to have. I’ve never had to use it, but know my friend has used his and thanks the day it was there.
I’ve never taken mine out of its hidden perch, except to test to see if and how it works. Hidden, because it‘s tucked under the back edge of the seat. And I have to remove the life vests to get at it.
It shouldn’t be hard to get one fabricated for yourself. Mine is made out of galvanized pipe, so easy to have one welded up.

I have some pictures of my Emergency Tiller for you to get an idea of its design. You can see how tucked in it is, in the cockpit locker as well. It comes out easy enough but thats after removing the life vests.
It is all galvanized pipe so easy to make up. The angle of the tube connect to the rudder post is about 40 degrees, but you’ll have to adjust that to your boat as needed. It is a very simple design.
My ruler decided to die this morning and not hold in position, so I did my best to show you the measurements but here they are anyway:
Tubing is 1 1/2 inches
Handle Length is 30 inches
Rudder Post Tube is 8 inches and made using 1 3/4 inch Galvanized pipe.
Rudder Post Tube Notch is 3 inches deep
Rudder Post Tube Notch Width is 1/2 inch
You’ll have to customize these measurements to fit your rudder post and area to swing the tiller in your cockpit.
One note is notice the rudder tube has a slight opening flare to it, about 1/4 inch. Which allows it to fit over the post on my boat. You may or may not have to do this
Hope this helps you out.

Here is an old photo of the emergency tiller for my H30. It’s about 30” long and clears the wheel. It’s galvanized steel. There are an endless number of designs for different boats, but it should be pretty easy for a welder to fabricate one to fit your boat. Mine lays in the aft lazarette next to the rudder post. It secures to the rudder post with a large clevis bolt and cotter pin. I keep a bungee cord in the lazarette to hold the lid open.
