I finally got around to making an emergency steering tiller for my H27. I cut slots into 1 1/4" galvanized pipe and screwed a 90 degree elbow on top. I will probably use PVC for the tiller extension.

Simple and elegant emergency solution!

I would take this one step further and fashion about a 16-inch "mini-tiller" that screws into the elbow - like from a short section of galvanized pipe. Then, nest a smaller diameter shaft inside the 1.25" extension to create a simple telescoping setup. So, the whole rig would collapse down to 16" long, but give you a pretty strong 26" tiller when assembled.

Something like:

PVC was my second choice for the tiller. The hardware store didn't have any pipe over 12" long. I will probably get a longer piece of galvanized pipe next time I'm at Lowes.

The tiller can not be over 15" or it will hit he binnacle. It will take some muscle to steer the boat with a 15" tiller..
