I am looking to install my new 12,000 btu Mermaid AC this spring, but am having trouble with finding a location. The manufacturer recommends placement in the hanging closet, but I do like what little space is there. Others in my marina have placed them in the port lazzarette aft of the water heater, but there is already enough extra weight on the port side (I have a slight list. I would like to place the unit in the storage area under the quarter berth, just to starboard of the ladder, but the unit is too high. It would fit if I would push the fuel tank back eighteen inches, but there is not enough clearance for the fuel tank to move it backA fellow boater proposed the following: buy (build) a smaller fuel tank with dimensions to fit behind the existing tank, this could be as small as six gallons tank (as we are on an inland lake and will not burn ten gallons of diesel in my lifetime). Mount the AC unit where the old tank was, as there is enough clearance on the center line. This works well in theory to me. The weight is low and on center, The blower will force air right up the isle to the v-berth, wire and plumbing runs will be short and direct, and easy to access for maintenance and shutting off the thru hull (to be placed in that area). Are there any issues with this plan? i.e. reduced resale secondary to a small fule tank, etc...
