1984 27' Air Conditioning Question

I am getting ready to make a decision on putting an air conditioning unit in my 1984 Hunter 27 Cherubini and have looked at several solutions so far. Right now I am looking at the Mermaid 9000 btu reverse cycle unit, but am open to suggestions if anyone has experience with one they have installed. I could really use some information and input from the group.

Have a Mermaid, a 12K unit, on my 37. Your interior room is only slightly less. Do you plan to use duct work to distribute throughout the boat? I did not, just blows straight into the salon. My 12K is fine on Lake Erie, too little while in Florida.

I have always been impressed with the guys that have installed small house units in their boats. I have seen type of installation explained on this site and others. I have also seen it done both in the cabin and in the companionway.

The thing I liked the most was the price. Way cheaper.

We are one those folks who decided to do a shore style AC unit in our 77 Hunter 30. Since we never use the quarter birth for sleeping we mounted the unit in the bulkhead at the back of the birth.

With it mounted there it can vent to the outside without blocking the companionway. By propping the lazerette open we can vent the excess heat it puts into the engine compartment. We use a couple of small fans to move the air around the cabin and so long as no one wants the v-berth door closed the boat gets very comfortable in about 2 hours running on a 95 degree day. Cost was $95 and some scrap lumber.

Only down side is if we need to work on the rudder post it does have to be pulled to get at it.
