Last night my throttle malfunctioned. Revs the engine when you push forward hard but nothing happens when you pull back. I can't seem to find an access point to visually inspect under the binnacle. Any advice on next steps?

I also have a 1983 and had a similar issue. You need to unscrew the compass at the top of the binnacle. In my case, there was a split pin that was a bit loose and had wiggled out, causing things to block. I expanded the split pin and tapped it back in. No problem since. It is now something that I inspect annually, along with general inspection of the linkage.

Check Engine Linkage Too

Check this stuff down on the stbd side of the engine to see if the housing is slipping/slipped..

Make sure the screw just below the wheel axle is snug.. don't loosen it!

Digging a little further, all appears well on the engine end. It appears to be related to a bracket that clamps the cables to the stern side of the binnacle interior. Pushing the throttle forward lifts the entire cable and jacket, rather than pulling the cable trough the jacket. Couldn't get a good look at in the dark, as it is attached fairly deep into the pillar. Anyone know where to find this part and how to re-attach it without deconstructing the entire steering quadrant?

For a look at what ya have to deal with, I downloaded the Merriman manual to the site. click on "Boat Info" and "Downloads General Info" and scroll down to Merriman Steering Parts.. scroll down in there a bit and there is a page that shows how it goes together.. depending on how the clip is, you may have to pull the wheel shaft. If you are lucky, you can do it from the top once the compass and mount are removed.. Good Luck.
