Hi, does anyone know for sure what the size is of the holding (waste) tank on a 1983 Hunter 27?

Just got this boat and the tank is pretty well hidden in the v-berth. I'd like to have an idea of the size so I can figure out my pump schedule.

Thanks!

I'm not sure it's possible to have a set pumpout schedule...'cuz how fast the tank fills up depends on how many people are aboard, for how long.

The tank vent is NOT an overflow, or a :"full" indicator! I suggest you put a guage on the tank..in fact, unless the tank is readily accessible and made of a material that allows the level to be checked visually, CG regs REQUIRE one. I recommend this one: newprovidencemarine Keeping an eye on it will help you get an idea of how fast you're filling up the tank.

Fwiw, the average flush is .5 gal...the average adult uses the toilet 5x/24 hrs. However, that's not cast in stone, so even if you know how many gallons the tank holds, you can still overflow it.

Your tank size is 15 gals.
Thanks...I realized there is a inspection plate on the top of the V-berth that looks into the tank. Not sure who put that there (factory or previous owner) hopefully the fumes will vent out the vent and not push through there. If it does I'll simply glass it over.

15 Gal is a good size tank. Should last us about 2-3 weekends easily with the kids.

2-3 weekends? No way...

One full weekend is closer to reality. Let's do the math.

Each person continuously aboard will put approx 2.5 gal/day into the tank...So you and your wife will put 5 gal/day into it. Each kid will put about 3 gal/day into it (kids use the toilet more than adults).--and you said kidS...plural, so you need to multiply 3 gal./# of kids and add that to the total volume. Two adults and two kids = 11 gal/day!

So unless you're planning to sit at the dock and use the marine facilities all the time, you'll be lucky to get two full days before you have to pump out.

You might want to check out the link in my signature...it goes to a comprehense "marine toilets and holding tanks 101" manual that'll help you learn how to operate and maintain your system to prevent problems...'cuz prevention is always easier and cheaper than cure.

Sensors

Hi Peggy,
Thanks for the link, I like how the sensors stick to the outside of the tank so there's no extra holes in the tank. Have you used them personally? and How accurate are they. The price certainly seems good.
