I am contemplating purchasing a 1983 Hunter 31. I will have it surveyed, but I am just wondering if it has any particular quirks or inherent problems I need to be aware of before pulling the trigger? The H31 I am contemplating purchasing has defective depth and speed instruments in the cockpit. They are so low they appeared to be difficult to read even when they did work. Has anyone replaced these or added some after market equipment on an H31 on the pedestal? Any feedback would be welcomed!

Look to see if the compression post is still solid. Also make sure the electrical panel does not have any water leaking into it. After 1983 Hunter moved it from under the doorway over to the chart table area. If the engine has not been replaced, it will have a 13HP yanmar. When I bought my 31, I was told it was a 16HP. But that OK, she will out power my buddys 18HP, its all in the prop. Good luck......

The Hunter 31 is a very comfortable easy to sail boat. Ours is a 1985 and the electrical panel is under the campanionway not by the nav station. Make sure that he surveyor particularily checks the mast step area for moisture and the rudder. In addition, the boat may have a "second skin" beneath the bilge. Check to see if there has been a bilge drain installed so that this area can be drained regularily. If not is it a souce of odurs. The compression post is very important to have checked as well.

2nd Skin
We were experiencing an odor problem on our Hunter. Clean head and replaced hoses did not rememdy the problem. Drained the holding tank and sanitized it but still the odur persisted. A surveyor friend suggested installing a bilge drain for winter storage which will allow the bilge to drain outside without engaging the pump. We began to drill the hole from the inside of the bilge and once the floor of the bilge was penetrated, an absolutely disgusting liquid began to ooze into the bilge. Once the hole was through ( on the starboard side about 2" from the center of the keel, this liquid drained out. The odur was so strong that it was noticed by people 4 boats away. I installed a stainless receptor and epoxied it in place and the receptor accomodates a threaded plug. Now when the boat is hauled this 2nd skin can be drained. This year as well as last, the liquid which came out was only water. Apparently this is quite common on the 31 models. Somehow, liquids, over the years, have drained into the area below the bilge and without anyway to drain the incumbent microbes decay and rot and while doing so smell really, really bad. The odur problem has been resolved.
