1981 keel board rope replacement

hi,i looked at three different hunter 23's and two hunter 22's and settled on a hunter 22
i need to replace the rope on the centerboard,
can it be done by removing dinette table?
I have a printout on the hunter22 centerboard mechanism,and was wondering how in the world one would go about leading the rope through all those blocks and sheaves without access through top of centerboard trunk.

i have all winter to work on boat,and want to replace all lines.
and cabin needs a good freshening up also..

probably getting ahead of myself,still have to pull her home 118 miles
boat seems to ride high on trailer,but i figure it is to keep weight off centerboard.
im gonna be a nervous wreck pulling boat home.....

Randy,

Taking off the table top is only a few screws and you will have complete access to centerboard lines.
It is easy.

can the keel pad eye also be reached?

No the line attaches to a cable and that goes through pulley and then into the centerboard well.
When you remove the table top it will be clear to you. Also just the table top not all the wood needs to come off.
I would also check the cable for broken strands while you are there. Just be careful not to cut your hand when you check it

keel cable question

ok so i figured out how the blocks all work together,but seems the cable to the keel is to long ... the keel can still go up another 5-6 inches into the keel slot/trunk but there is no more room for rasing inside the boat ,my guess is that keel cable was replaced and not crimped short enough.
Anyone have any idea what the travel distance is between sheave and block system?

How do you know that it is not up all the way? The only time I have seen that mine is not up all the way, was when it was hauled out on a sling, at the yard. I don't have a trailer. But when I borrowed a trailer, the keel rested on a board on the trailer, and it looked like it was up all the way. I have heard other owners say same thing.

i can lift it by hand from under boat , can lift it about five inches more into slot.
I am assuming when they give draft depths is for keel board all the way up into slot not hanging down resting on a trailer.

With the boat out of the water, there is NO bouyancy force on the keel and it WILL drop a little. Be assured, that when it's in the water the keel will be "full up". When your H22 IS in the water, grab a snorkel set and verify / look for yourself. Yes, there MAY be an improper padeye installation on your boat, but I tend not to think so.

Everything that I've read on this string is accurate, especially that Inarathree guy in sunny FLA.

thanks for advice,but a bouyant keel? i know the rudder is bouyant and needs a rope to pull it down but the keel? am confused here,
anyone have pictures of their hunter22 sailboat on trailer,take a look at my photo in my profile and tell me what ya think.

The keel rope on the H22 is used to pull the keel up, not down.

Pic of boat on stands in the yard. Keel rope is fully pulled up. I didn't believe it, so i had someone lift it up all the way, while I pulled the keel rope tight.

...and with the keel line pulled in (keel up), the bouyant force on the keel will lift it a little farther. while on land, there is no bouyant force and the weight of the keel aft of the pivot is more than forward of the pivot and the keel 'sags' some. it's one of those density things.

can you tell me if there should be any play in keel when i move it side to side with my hand?

Side to side play, as in if it's sliding on the keel pin? This play should be minimized by the installation of washers between the keel and brackets when mounted.

Or side to side play, as if when it's down would rock? This type of play indicates the bushing is wearing down. The hole through the bushing wears to an oval, allowing the keel to rock back and forth.
