Hi Everyone,

I am looking at putting a Boomkicker and boom vang on my 1981 Hunter 27 and wasn't sure how to attach the boom vang to the mast base. Most of the photos I've found show some kind of mast collar, but I don't have one on my H27. Could you share any photos of your boom vang installation if you have them?

(Please skip the comments about your Garhauer rigid vang, I got a great deal on the Boomkicker. :D)

Thanks in advance for any photos and ideas you can give me!

Well you certainly need some attachment at the mast base. if you check rigrite.com for your mast you will probably find the fitting you need. may need to tap some threads to install but that's pretty easy

Thanks Bill. Rig-rite probably does have what I need if I knew what I was looking for. :)

The Rig-rite site says mast collars are for keel-stepped boats, which prompted me to go back to the Boomkicker site and squint at the photos they have of the small and mid-sized boats and it looks like most just riveted a padeye below the Boomkicker fitting at the bottom of the mast above the mast step (if that's the right name).

I'm probably over-analyzing it.

Thanks Ken, too bad the boom vang attachment point at the base of the mast is not visible in the photo, beyond not being a Hunter 27.

Looks like you have a mast plate that I don't have, which would make hooking it all up much easier. This is turning out to less simple than I thought.

Might have to go sailing and think about it. ;-)

The Boomkicker is attached to the base of the mast, in the track, which is standard. Only the vang is attached to the plate.

Thanks, Ken.

The question was really about putting a boom vang on my 1981 Hunter 27 and how I wasn't sure how to attach the boom vang to the mast base.I possibly should have Left boomkicker out of the title, since I understand how that goes on, it was the vang I was not sure about.

Sorry; I don't understand the use of both a Boomkicker and a vang in the same place on the boom. I've only been sailing and working in boat design for 42 years and this escapes me. Maybe someone can explain the reasoning.

If you do not have a mounting point on your mast for a vang you will have to add one. It is MUCH more substantial than the boomkicker attach point, because the load is PULLING, not pushing.

Nautos makes a decent one that adjusts for mast size.

Thanks for the link, Jackdaw, I was also considering a mast plate, but good to have options from experienced folks.

I have a 1982 H27 and I have a boom vang. I will look for a pic, but the vang attaches to the mast base on a ring the same as the ones on the boom for the main sheet. Not sure if that makes sense. I will get some pictures for you. It should not be too involved to add.
