My son and I just picked up a 1981 seidelmann 24' Hull number 40.The floor is shot "delamanated" And the inside of the hull has had the vinyl removed . He did do a good job of removing the adhesive. He was planing on painting over the fiber glass .I like this idea . But i don't want to sand it first if I don't have to. should I seal it with something first or not. I plain on the painting it with two thick coats of of a good marine paint . I will replace the trim . I am replaising the kyle bolt , it was a bet of a job too remove the bolt. The trailing edge of the fiberglass kyle is in rough shape . I will have too have the boat lifted of the trailer hi enough too drop the swing and drag a new kyle raising rope through , have the boat set back on the trailer , take it home repair the glass kyle , then it's back too the marina too install it. This boat has a thousand pounds of led kyle that the retractable swing kyle sets in too. Any ides on what I am up too Would be great Thanks Alfred E Mewman .

What floor? The inside of the cabin (sole)?
Painting makes everything look better. If you use any type of enamel or epoxy be aware of the health risks of inhaling the paints' solvent vapors, this is a real problem in tight spaces like the inside of a boat. Good ventilation and the right respirators are the key to not making an ultimate sacrifice for your hobby.
If the surface is clean, I've not had any problems with applying enamels directly onto bare fiberglass but you'll need to give it a good scrubbing with something to remove the waxes from the finishing (polyester) resin and I use acetone for this. Again, protect yourself and in this case gloves are required as well as the venting and respirators.
The thing is, if you can smell the product you're using you're taking it into your lungs. Bad juju.
For the inside of a boat, I don't waste money on UV protected marine paints. I use Rustoleum for the local hardware store.
There are plenty of other things to waste money on!

The first sailboat I owned was a 1981 Seidelmann 24 or maybe it was the 24.1. It was the one that had the Sonar keel. While the thing was a cow in light air it was a great boat for big waves and big wind. I agree with the above poster. Scrub the interior with acetone and then paint right over it. I had the same problem with mine-the vinyl clad interior was shot so I pulled it all off. Very messy to do but it was tons better when done.
