1981 22’Cape Dory

The 5 hp will have more than enough power. Do you have a long shaft motor? Most sailboats with outboards use the long shaft to get the prop deep enough in the water.
I just bought the sailboat I am not able to pick it up at this time because of king tide and flooding of the dock. So not sure length of shaft I know it should be A 20 or 25 shaft
If the motor comes with the boat, then presumably the prior owner bought the correct motor. Of course as you will learn in your boating career not all prior owners knew what they were doing.
Welcome to SBO. The Cape Dory is a pretty little boat. It won't be the fastest boat on the water but it will be among the prettiest and best built.

I admire your choice of boats! Good move for a first time buyer and sailor. My wife and I are in the process of restoring a 1972 CD Typhoon and would be happy to chat if you like. The Private Message function is a good tool for that purpose. The CD 22 was always on my wish list, but our vehicle is only capable of pulling the weight of the Typhoon and its trailer, so that was our choice.
