Good afternoon, I have a 1980 Hunter 27 that seems to have just cropped up with a problem. First thing is I don't have the engine owners manual so I have no idea on how to change the oil. does anyone know where i can find an owners manual or how to, to change the oil? The second problem I have is that I powered it almost 10 miles and had no smoke, then I connected up the alternator and the secondary battery and as soon as the engine warmed up (about 10 minutes) it filled the cabin with smoke. The smoke could have been oil or rubber, i'm not sure. Has anyone else had this problem? Or any pointers on what I should look at? Your help is greatly appreciated.

On most of the little inboard diesels, it is almost impossible to get the drain plug out, let alone not end up with all the oil in the bilge. There are several little pumps available, that you stick in the dipstick tube and suck the oil out. I use one that attaches to my cordless drill. West has several models. It is still a pain in the ass, but beats the drain plug method. Since you didn't experience smoke before you attached the alternator, and the smoke came into the boat, I would have to think the belt is slipping to the point of burning itself up. Probably should replace the belt, then make sure it is tight. Also the alternator may be frozen up, and no matter how tight the belt won't cure the problem. The alternator should turn freely by hand with the belt off. If it doesn't it's time for a rebuild or replacement.

Wow!

That makes perfect sense, thank you greatly for the idea, i'll check it tonight and see if that is what is causing it. Thank you again.
