1980

In 1980, it was a Yanmar 2QM15. This is a very durable, two cylinder, raw water cooled engine that develops a peak of fifteen horsepower, fourteen horsepower on a continuous basis. This engine came from a series that were lightweight in their day, but a good bit heavier than the engines that came after. They are legendary for their simplicity, longevity, durability, noise and vibration! Someone once told me that they were based upon an engine that pumped water on a continuous basis into rice paddies in Japan. I don't doubt it, but it could be just an amusing story.

1981 H33

I own a 1981 H33 and it also has a 2Qm15 Diesel. I did replace the water pump last year with a larger capacity ( Sherwood water pump). I was having over heating problems and this solved the problem. That is the only problem I had. Pretty good for 20-year old diesel that gets lots of use.

True myth

The early Yanmars were in fact based on simple industrial engines, and a lot of them did in fact see lots of service pumping water in rice paddies. They got lousy fuel, minimal service and still had a reputation for running forever.
