1980 H27 Emergency Tiller System

Sorry for a duplicate post but I piggy backed off of a 10 year old post and the system seems to have eaten it...

My 1980 H27 has an emergency tiller post exiting out of the front of the aft seating. The emergency tiller device its self was lost well before I got the boat. The tiller post is smooth, with no teeth and the inside of the shaft is filled with what appears to be cork. So if you actually had the emergency tiller how would you attach it to the post. Does anyone have an image of the original before I just create my own monstrosity to do the job?

Here is an image form the manual for the Hunter 27X the racing version of the 2007 27 design. It may help.

The reason one sails or cruises slowly with an emergency tiller installed, is the thing on most boats is difficult to handle. It is also ditch effort before calling for a tow. And in the end you may need a tow to get into the Marina. With most set ups there is not the leverage to force the rudder over to either direction. The faster you go the more force needed.

The stainless beercan looking thing in the middle of my seat is the emergency tiller post... No way to attach to it that I can see. But two holes and a tiller handle would do the trick... Don't judge the paint... I'm working on that this weekend if it doesn't rain. The previous owner painted it with what appears to be house paint. - it's a bummer man.

That thing is attached to the rudder and spins with the wheel...You can see how that might pinch the underside of fat little leg if you weren't paying attention when steering...

Looks like a PO has done some some work. The question, would be why, what is being hidden? I would remove what you mention as cork and dig in there until you find a pin going across the top. That pin serves as a "key" so you can connect a slotted piece of tubing that serves as the base to the emergency tiller. Be careful, just in case what is being hidden is a cracked top rudder shaft support.
