What type of wood is the 2x4 support beam under the mast mount made from? What have people used in there experience.

Mine was teak. 3 1/2 x 1 1/4. Any good solid straight grained wood should work.
BTW it's called a compression post

On my 1978 it is white ash, stained to look like oak. I replaced w/ ash, which is easy to work with and looks nice next to the new mahogany bulkheads. I think it is important to seal the bottom with epoxy, as ash is not very rot resistant.
