1979 Hunter 30 Quarterberth Hatch

I'm starting to re-wire my H30 and am wondering if anyone has experience in adding a hatch aft of the one used to access the circuit panel shown in the pictures below. It seems crazy that there isn't one here already so I'm wondering what is back there that I might not know about.

The wiring from the panel leads through this space into the engine compartment, so I know there is a void. Any reason not to cut out an access panel in the top of the quarter berth panel to be able to access this wiring? Any advice on what to use to close the access hole while keeping the surface reasonably flush for the cushion?

I believe that you will find that area is filled with foam. I was trying to snake some wiring in that area and got foam off the end and no wiring would go throw. If you do open the area please let us know what you find.

As an owner of an old H27 I am constantly amazed that the electrics still work as well as they do, given its age and poor layout. An electric rewire, although always on my list, somehow seems to constantly be deferred untill "later." I agree that wires running behind voids and through foam is always a problem. In the end, given that a complete rewire (even in stages) is in the works for you, hopefully most voids and blind runs can just be bypassed.

This year I am actually looking forward to some rewiring. Routing all wires (plus messenger) through some nice new PVC tucked-up under the cabin liner and around the engine compartment should do wonders. Looking at drooping wires running every-which-way in to the far reaches of the boat is always a stress producer. I look forward to the day that I wil proudly open up the engine compartment for display to visitors. Now it is just an embarassment. Good luck in your rewire!
