Hello,

Has anyone recently replaced their standing rigging on a 70's Hunter 30? I'm interested in what it cost to have it fabricated. If you measured it, had the rigging shop measure it, replaced it with original size and type, or heavier, used existing hardware, or replaced all hardware, etc. What was the cost and who did it? Were you satisfied? Looking for an idea of the cost of standing rigging replacement for a 1979 H-30....

Kind regards,
Bob

Bob:

Contact Seco South for a current quote. They probably made the original rigging. I found that their prices are the best and good quality too.

You can remove your old rigging and send it to them. Be sure to mark each piece if you decide to send them your old stuff.

Bob, Just a quick question- Why do you want to replace your standing rigging? broken wire strands or is it missing parts.

Re the above words I have highlighted from the opening query. And the attached picture of a piece of rigging hardware that used to be on my boat. Here's a recount of my "experience".

I bought my 1980 Cherubini Hunter 36 in mid 2007. The standing rigging was replaced at end 2004 as evidenced by the rigger's invoice. Turnbuckles, wire, labor, etc.

Subsequently, until my purchase, the vessel was sailed hardly at all ... and actually was on the hard for most of the next two years. During the summer of 2012, because I sail frequently in the high winds of central SF Bay, I decided to engage a well-known rigging company to do a safety inspection. The experienced employee got his eyes within inches from everything -- compression post base at the keel, up to the masthead, to bow stem fittings, to shroud turnbuckles/chainplates, and backstay fittings. A few small maintenance items were noticed (and attended to), but overall, the rig passed muster. Good for another few years.

12 or so months on, on July 4th 2013, the pictured double-jaw toggle that served to attach the forestay turnbuckle to the bow stem fitting failed in a gust.

Apparently this fitting was re-used by the 2004 rigger. All the other similar type toggles at the shroud-to-chainplate turnbuckles were obviously a different manufacturer and were much more robust than the failed one fitted to the forestay. The forestay toggle looked fine from the outside which is why the rig inspection a year earlier missed it.

Anyway, I just thought to recount my experience. When investigating for repair of the damage caused to my furler, and concerned about the integrity of my forestay (which on close visual inspection seemed undamaged), I was told by a couple of riggers that they do not re-use even good looking turnbuckles. New wire = new turnbuckles and fittings. Anyway something to consider if you are replacing older rigging ... The firm that will be supplying the parts, or doing the work, can be you best source of advice on this.

Ian,

Just entertaining the thought of what would it cost? No problems with the rigging whatsoever. I purchased the boat in 2005 and have no idea of how old the rigging was at that point so an exploratory question.

rardi,

Agreed. If I replace any of it, I will replace all of it. The question that comes to mind is if everything passes the standard checks by trained rigging experts do we then replace it anyway strictly due to calendar age? It seems in your case you were very proactive and had a hardware failure, disconcerting at best, although possibly explained by circumstances.

Thanks very much,
Bob

i had seco south make mine and am very happy with it ...i took my old stuff to him and he did a forensic analysis on the old stuff and duplicated it to a t...it worked out just fine....better if you let them do the measuring incase they get one incorrect they will make it good no charge but if you measure it and its incorrect its on you ......this included for and back stays along with the upper side stays and 4 lower stays and new turnbuckle bodies using my old terminals he said my terminals (toggles) were in good shape ...cost was about $900

I am currently in the process of replacing the rigging on my '80 H30. The initial problem was a "frozen" main halyard sheave. As the mast needs to come down to replace the sheave I decided it was time to replace all of the standing rigging. I removed the exisiting rig and took it to a local rigger that built the shrouds for approx. $1200. Replacements for the original Kenyon aluminum sheaves could not be found, so I had a machine shop clean up the two best sheaves, slightly drill out the centers and insert slightly larger bearings for use as the two halyard sheaves. I had two new sheaves fabricated by the same machinist out of some type of plastic / nylon for the unused sheaves. Total machinist cost for two new sheaves, two refurbed sheaves, four new bearings and two new pins: $190. While the mast ws down I replaced the wiring, lights, coaxial cable and antennae. roughly another $200. So, minus the cost to have the yard drop and step the mast out of pocket for me approx. $1600.

I replaced the standing rigging on my 1982 H-30 this summer for about $1,200. This included all-new hardware. I had it done at the Turner Marine in Mobile, AL.
