atomic 4

I have a 1977 Catalina 30 with the standard rig and shoal keel. It is a very stable and confidence inspiring boat. The atomic 4 is a good reliable engine that is smooth and quiet compared to the diesels. It provides ample power and is relatively easy to maintain. I don't think you will find a better boat for the money.

Atomic 4

I have a 1977 C 30 Tall rig with Atomic 4. Recommend prior to purchase you contact Moyer Marine at www.Moyermarine.com and ask them what key items you should check on the engine during your pre purchase inspection before you invest in a survey. Also a book titled Surveying Fiberglass Boats is helpful as it gives you all the areas to look at (other than the engine) that a survey will cover. The last point is the HEAD! When you look at the boat, look at it after it has been buttoned up all day and be the first one to open the hatch. If the head oder knocks you down BEWARE. Good luck.

Get a Survey!

By all means. It is definitely worth the money. Check the boat out and if it is pretty clean order a survey; and do not use the recommendation of the seller or broker, ask knowledgable friends or acquaintances. I would also spend a little more money for one that is well outfitted, because it will cost you a lot more to do it after the fact. Good Luck. MJ

I got one

I ahve a '70 c30 TRBS that I bought in Feb of this year. I reccomend a good survey. I'm very happy with mine. She is very comfortable and sea worthy. We ran into some of Lake Michigan's famous waether on the delivery home. She weathered it better than the crew :)

Tall Rig for RI/CT/MA

I have a '78TR w/BS and love it. The Tall Rig is never "too much" sail for New England waters. First reef at 20-22 knots. We are the 3rd owner and have been sailing her for 12 years. The Atomic was a good engine but it gave out when it was still a teenager. I replaced it with a Universal 25xp diesel (5 years ago). It was the best upgrade I ever made, next to the CD-Roler furling system. I would highly recommend getting a survey on any boat you may purchase. Check the following site to help with the process. http://www.marinesurvey.org/

Thanx

Thanks to all for the advice. I inspected the boat very closely, and it looks good, but it has rusty keel bolts, look like S/S with no epoxy over them. I'll be getting a survey, but I don't like what I've read in the thread concerning the bolts. Seems like alot of work to replace or repair.
