I am considering purchasing a 1979 22ft o-day sailboat. Are there any specific problems with this boat that I should be aware of. Thanks in advance for your responses.

If I remember correctly, 1979 was a transitional year. They switched to the keel/centerboard. The following year they switched from masthead to fractional rig.

The 222 model was a nice improvement on the 22. Production started in about 1984. The 222 has looks that still hold up today. Enjoy.

Bpb, so that you don't get confused, keep in mind there is significant difference between the O'day 22, and the O'day 222.
The 22 is an older style, with the boxier proportioned cabin that is more rounded, with 2 windows per side.
The 222 is newer styling, with more of a swept, angled cabin, and a single smoked window per side angled to follow the design of the house.
Without looking up any performance numbers, I'd suspect that a 22 fractional keel/CB and the 222 (also fractional keel/CB) would be fairly similar. It would be a different story comparing a masthead rig 22…
Well, it's just one number, but the Portsmouth rating for a 22 CB is 104.4, 22 SD is 102.6 and the 222 is 98.3. Huh. So that 222 is quite a bit faster...

The 222 would be nice for additional space in the cabin, but too heavy for my tow vehicle.
Then again, moving about in the cabin could be facilitated by a boat without compression post, such as a Precision 21 or 23. If there were an Admiral in the picture, or children, I suppose I'd have to move up, but for now, the 192 suits my sailing and overnighting needs...

I looked at one last year and was ready to pull the trigger when I noticed the area around the mast base was rotten and sunken down. I don't know uf that is a common problem, but it looked like quite a project to repair.
