I have read numerous threads regarding the replacement of O'Day centerboard pendants.
Let me pass on my current experience as well as ask for ideas for the best resolution.
I have a 1976 O'Day 25 with a wire to rope spliced pendant fed to the cockpit.
The pendant was "stuck" as several other people have already mentioned. I purchased a replacement rope/shackle pendant from D&R. When I recently lifted the boat and dropped the centerboard I was faced with two surprises:
1) The wire pendant is fed directly/permanently into the centerboard. No way to attach a shackle or replace the wire.
2) The reason the pendant was "stuck" is that at the bottom of the pendant tube at the top of the centerboard trunk there is a "cone fitting" that allows the 1/8" wire to pass but serves as a block to stop the rope inside the tube. During a recent minor mishap, I caught the bottom of the centerboard which pulled about a foot of the rope out thru the fitting preventing it from pulling back. The only recourse was to pull the rope completely out still attached to the wire and centerboard and that's where I'm at now.
Proposed Plan:
I have run a fish tape and a piece of old shroud wire down the tube and into the centerboard trunk. No problem.
I need to find a wire/rope splice pendant replacement. Anybody have a source for a wire/rope splicer?
I need advice on the best way to attach the wire to the centerboard. Thimble eye in the existing wire at the centerboard or cut the wire off and mount a bracket to the centerboard for a shackle.
Any advise would be much appreciated,
