I am rebuilding an oday 27 I bought for $100. It sank due to a lighning strike in port. I have repaired all of the holes in the hull. I am replacing all of the plywood in the boat. I have replaced the main and forward bulkheads. Re-Intalled the chainplates into fresh marine ply and glass like orignal. I have a few questions for whoever wishes to respond: I've been reading alot about deck delamination. The deck, overall, seems sound. Did notice the deck pulling up slightly at the mid-shroud chainplates. Is it acceptable to ignore this or is this a major problem. I am in the process of sanding bottom paint...haven't done the keel yet. Cus I haven't dug down to it yet, I have this question: Is the keel glass with steel shot..or is it a steel keel? I removed the rudder, it has corrosion on the aluminum shaft. Have 3 options.. repair the shaft..probably not good. Cut the rudder apart and replace it with a stainless shaft. Or put out 1250$ for a nice new one from D&R marine. Has anyone tried to repair one? What about rudder bearings...I removed some nasty-old technology stuff. What do most people replace stock rudder bearings with that is more modern? Thanks in advance for anyone who responds. Lee

I have a 1979 27, I had a problem with the lower chainplates as well, they are only glassed into the core of the deck and subject to core-rot, in my case it was so severe that I almost lost the port-rear. you may want to look into re-coring the deck in this area. As far as the rudder and bearing talk with Rudy at D&R, the replacement he puts up is a stainless post and far superior than anything else on the market (also you cant beat his price to quality ratio)the bearings, I picked up a set at D&R works great, glassed them into the log and no wobble since. The keel on my '78 has an internal lead ballast, thus no keel bolts exist and the outside is fibreglass. I am not sure if the early 27s are the same. I believe that the stainless rudder stocks are far superior, but $1250 seems high. I personally would rebuild the rudder myself with new stainless and weld internal brackets. As for the bearings - check out this site: http://www.s20.org/bearing.htm Fore and aft chain plates rely on the deck structure to be sound. If any delamination or rot is present in this area - I would open it up. I think the O'Days of this vintage are prone to rot in this area.

Hi Lee, Repaired my 1978 27' O'Day rudder by welding up the area around the lower bearing due to wear. Need to be careful not to over heat the fiberglass. I hand filed to size - a bit too cumbersome to turn in a lathe!! Also increased the size of both the top and bottom bearings (amybe +2 more inches)using high density nylon. Also replaced the rudder top cap and tiller connection with stainless steel - pivot bolt upsized to maybe 1/2". These changes were to reduce stress and increase working life. Rework made around 1990 - haven't looked at it since. Bob

I was thinking about adding aluminum much like you did. Would have to pay someone to do it. Do you feel that it would be strong enough? Even for a blue water cruise? How much have you tested it? My corrosion covers about 2 inches of shaft about 1/8 inch deep. I also thought about inserting an aluminum rod into the core to make the shafte essentially solid. Any further comments welcome.
