I just bought a 1974 oday 22, took it sailing the first time and figured I need to get a boom vang, how large of one do I need? Westmarine.com has a mini, small, medium, and large ranging from 660 lb to 220 lb.
I'm sure one of the WM vangs would work - I think the "small" is the about the right size. D&R Marine has vangs specific to all the Oday models. It will attach via a ball fitting on a wire swaged to the block assembly, which fits into a keyhole slot fitting attached to the underside of the boom. If you don't have the boom fitting already you will need that. The one disadvantage of a vang on this boat is that the stock reefing method is to pull the boom out from the gooseneck and roll the sail around the boom. Simple, but you lose the ability to use a vang. Brad
Congrats on the 22. I bought a 75 O'Day 22 this past spring, great boat. The small kit will be fine, but I made my own instead of paying the 60 bucks that they want. Just buy 2 blocks and secure the bottom block to the bottom of the mast - I didn't have a fitting and had to improvise. Secure the end of the line below that block and run it up and through the top block (attached to the fitting on the boom), and back down to the mast block and out. Cleat the line and you're fine. You can improvise the attachment of the top block. If you reef by rolling as the previous poster stated, make sure you are able to quickly unattach the top fitting. Or you can buy the kit. Just an idea. Good luck with the boat.
