I can't seem to find the answer to this in the archives, so forgive me if this has been answered before.
I have a 1974 Hunter 25 purchased in October 2008 and we just spent a year refurbishing various parts of it including a revised mast tabernacle. Up until now, I have not even put it in the water. Now that it is in the water, I would like to find out about tuning the rig, i.e. mast tilt, bend, etc. if any. I haven't really tuned the shrouds yet, but I notice the port spreader shroud end looks slightly forward of the mast centerline, and I assume that is wrong. Should the spreaders be even with the mast or slightly aft (if there is bend)?
Any pertinent advice, reference or a picture (!) would be much appreciated.
BTW, pictures under "Heelamonster"

Thanks,

Dave Milo

Just as an add-on, we sailed the boat for the first time today. On a beam reach, the upper and aft shrouds become visibly slack on the lee side, although the forward lower seems to remain mostly taut. Seems to sail fine, but it was just kind of a guess.

Thanks.

Thanks for the update Dave. I spent some time this morning looking for some help for you. If you use "Search" with "tuning" for the H25 you will see some old posts. Read the one by JC2. That's John Cherubini Jr., son of THE John Cherubini, who has been restoring an H25. Then I think in "Hunter Owners Modifications" under the H27 you will find a PDF that includes your H25.

The two spreaders should be slightly up swept but not back nor forward. I tune by first getting the rake established. A racer will give you that number. Then snug up the uppers and get the mast centered. Snug up the lowers. Sail the boat and take the slack out of the leward shrouds with small and equal turns before changing tack and doing the other side, back and forth. Finally, with the shrouds tight you can deal with any bend with some tightening of the backstay while loosening the aft lowers and tightening the forward lowers. Again, in very small increments. Then bend will have to come from an H25 expert. At least that is the way I was taught.
