1972 O'Day 2+2

I have been offered a 72 O'day 2+2 sail boat for the price of free. It has been sitting covered on a trailer for 5 years in some ones back yard and my job is to drive it away. I have tried to do so and found out that the roller bearings in a wheel hub have rusted and the wheel of course will not roll. The current owners tell me that the trailer is original. The trailer markings have washed off and rusted over so they are not legible. Does any one know who produced the trailers for O'day sailboats around this time? I wish to call them and find out the size of the roller bearings so I can replace them.

Last year I was in the same predicamet. I first fought to get the wheel off for an hour. Once the wheel was off I took the whole thing down to a local benny's store (wall mart should have the same). I matched the bearing on the shelf with the one I needed. Once Back at the trailer a dremel tool worked wonders to get the frozen bearings off

Eric:Last summer, I was in a similar position. We had just purchased a 1976 2+2. I was able to get the trailer home (just barely). The trailer was made by Cox which has since gone out of business. The bearings on the trailer were one of the standard sizes; you just need to know which size.We put the boat up on blocks, pulled the trailer out and took the axel off. (not hard to do). Our bearings were rusted in, but any good traier shop should be able to tell you the size bearings you need. The axel itself only weighs about 20 lbs. so you can easily carry it.There are several articles on the web which will show you how to replace the bearings or your trailer dealer can be of help.In our case we also bought galvanized rims and new tires as well as a new spare. Don't take a chance with dry rot; it isn't worth it.Good Luck,Jim
