I recently purchased a 1971 Contest Noordzee 30' Mk 2. It seems to be on the same identical hull as the old 30 ,but with more freeboard,a lower cabin profile, and bullwarks. It came with an atomic, soon to be replaced with a newer diesel. I am curious about the sailing qualities of this boat, especially how she does upwind. I sailed her w/o engine 15 miles in the Chesapeake Bay when I bought her a month ago,but was beam and broad reaching with old tatty sails, and she did well off the wind. She seems to be a rock solid offshore boat,as she was sailed on her own bottom in 1971 from Holland to here. Also,I'm wondering where the water tank was located, and the capacity and what it was made of.Any information about this boat would be appreciated.Thanks.Seth

the water tanks are probably located under the port and starboard settees. I believe they will have a capacity similar to my Contest 31 which is 22 gallons per tank. the later models of the contest 30 had a very similar layout to the 31. Good luck! John S. "Perkeo ll"

Hi Seth -- I also have Contest 30 Mark II (didn't know it was called the Noordzee) that is berthed in Annapolis. I have an Atomic 4 engine that I hope to keep as long as possible because it is so simple to maintain and work on. My water tanks are under the port and starboard settees, as John indicated. I think that Contest's literature said that their capacity was about 40 gallons, probably translated from a metric measure. I have done quite a bit of refreshing of the boat, and am continuing to do so, so please let me know if I can be of any assistance. She is a pretty nice sailing boat, but not in the lightest winds. What are you replacing the Atomic 4 with?

Steve.sorry I'm so slow. Been working on my contest a lot.Does your boat have bulwarks and a high fiberglass coaming around the cockpit, and a "bubble butt"transom? I've got a lot of questions about your water tanks, etc.Apparently mine was built w/o tanks installed, certainly not under the settees,no sign of any tank having been in the v berth area.Very strange. Please email me at: captainzeb@earthlink.net. Thanks much seth
