I am being offered a 25' 1969 Hunter Sloop sailboat, but cannot find any info on this boat or its general worth. Does anyone have photos and details of this boat? (pros & cons) I am new to sailing and before I go to see the boat and start trading I would like to know what I am getting into! Thanks Ivan

you are ahead of their time.

Ivan: I believe that the first boats that Hunter Marine Corp. offered was 1973-1974.

Hunters have been manufactured since 1969...

... but in Britain. Also, I don't think they offered a 25' boat at that time. Just the (now) famous Squib.

Ivan, find a ladder. . .

and get the HIN off of the transom, top and starboard corner. The hull id will identify the builder, year, and model. If none there then it is not a Hunter.

HIN's

Ed, the USCG didn't require HIN's until one of the mid '70's years. My 1972 Coronado has a brass builder's plate instead of a molded-in HIN. My '78 trailer boat does have a molded-in HIN. S/V Intrepid '83 H34 #113

Ivan, we bought our first sailboat in 1998...

a 1989 H28. We looked at a lot of boats. What helped us was to put together a list of things we wanted on the boat. We happily cruised on her for three years, then did the same thing when we decided to upgrade to our current boat. The list was very helpful in making sure we purchased a boat that met our basic needs. The surveyor we hired to inspect both boats confirmed that we were making a smart buy in each case. We've had our current boat for four seasons and have no regrets. A good marine surveyor can tell you what you're getting into with the boat in question. Terry

No such thing as 1969 Luhrs-built Hunter

The first model offered by Luhrs brothers as Hunter Marine (div. of Silverton Yacht) was the Hunter 25 semi-flush-deck sloop, designed by John E Cherubini, in 1972.

Early Hunter 25's

I think you are right about the Cherubini Hunter 25. Additionally, I remember when buying my 1978 Hunter 25 that there was an earlier model 25 that had what I thought was a 'Sidelman' design with a flush deck sloping from the bow to the forward hatch to the companionway. Later Hunter 25's have a step up to the cabin forward of the mast with the hatch on the raised part of the cabin top and two or three fixed portlights per side. I believe the hulls were the same. Look at the photos on the other parts of this forum.
