Cebellas is offering an inflatable pfd for 19.99. Yes they are now on back order but they are still taking orders. They are type V with type III rating , camo in color, and have a manual inflator. BUT if it is not wearing on or having that on, the price is right for some extra safety and comfort! No I am not affiliated with the company.

Camo may not be the nicest, but at night on the deck who cares. I would much prefer an automatic, but if this gets SWMBO to put one on at night while underway its a win in my book.

Hmm, is it only me that this seems contradictory to? If I'm going overboard at night, I'd like to be seen. I'd rather not be hiding. I can see a couple of good ole boys wearing these on their weekend fishing trip, fall out of the bass boat, yank the cord, climb back in, grab another beer. But at night on a sailboat? Get knock over by the boom, unconcious and can't pull pin, can't be seen by crew. No thanks, not me. You get what you pay for. Tom

When inflated, the bladder is bright yellow. As for SWMBO, an automatic with a good harness and lifting strap would be far better in my opinion. Some more emotional crewmembers are less likely to think about pulling the cord when they hit the 40 degree water. I am convinced that the one my wife was wearing saved her life. She said that she was so surprised to find herself in the water that she would not have thought of pulling the cord. Of course you could do some training exercises but it will probably never be like falling by accident into cold swirling water wearing lots of clothing and a heavy wool sweater. Then try telling her that you will have to pull her out of the water onto the deck by her hair and see what she says. Well....maybe not!

Yes, this blue one for $149 http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product/10001/-1/10001/221979/10001/12387/106/8 should be much more visible as you're sinking to the bottom! Sarcasm aside, when they inflate, the big yellow balloons come out, and they're pretty visible. I of course would prefer the auto-inflate ones. Keep extra "aspirins" with you, though, because if you're out for a couple of days in humid weather, it will auto-inflate for you on deck. One other concern about the Cabela's PFD is the 22lb of bouyancy. The others I've looked at have from 33 to 40 lbs. One of the funniest things I saw was on an overnight race. The spinnaker trimmer was standing between the upper & lower shrouds, and somehow caught his "jerk to inflate" handle on a shroud, inflating his jacket, and trapping him between the shrouds until he could find the deflate valve.

For this price, I can live with Camo. We are talking savings of $100.00 per. I ordered 2. They will be nice to have aboard on those hot days when the Omega feels like an oven. Personally, as I am floating over the lee lifelines, my hand will be groping for the lanyard! I will have that baby inflated before I hit the water if I am conscious. Good winds, Eric
