Hi all, My boat has been sitting since November 2004 and yesturday I pulled it out of my car port to clean it up a bit. Our club (H.D.A.S.C.) have plans to sail at Mission Bay San Diego California in May which is about a 4 hour drive for me. I decided to repack my trailer (Venture) wheel bearings, What a shock I got ! I was really suprised to discover that the bearings were shot on the one side. The boat and trailer are a year old and I thought I was doing good job by hosing everything down when I pulled it out of the salt water and keeping everything lubed. The inner and outer bearings were shot so I replaced them and added "bearing Buddies" with marine grease. I also ordered a new hub complete with bearings to have as a spare, a cheap investment $50.00 when towing. I also put together all the tools, scissor jack and marine grease that I would need to change a hub out if I had to. My thought is, I might have to replace a hub on the road which might delay me in sailing or returning home but its not going to stop me. I usually travel 100 miles round trip to go sailing. Now if I was not prepared to do this, What would my day be like !....getting some one to come out to where I broke down, getting a tow, and the possiblity of a shop having my part for my trailer.............the day would be shot and the dollar cost, a couple of hundred dollars I would expect. lets don't forget the tires, lights and REGISTRATIONS TAGS ! So........I kwow we are all anxious to get back on the water, lets make that an enjoyable day. Happy sailing......... Glenn

Good on You

The only other suggestion I can think of is to give the bearings ample time to cool after you arrive at the ramp. If not when you imerse them the water is sucked inside as they rapidly cool in the water. Also do not over grease the Bearing Buddies fill with grease just up to the point where the diaphram moves. It is not a big issue for you but if you have brakes the grease will leak out of the rear seal onto the brakes.
