All, On my Hunter 170 the jib will not un-furl all the way. It will make it to what should be the last furl of the sail then sticks. I can go forward and un-furl it the rest of the way by hand, but this is a pain. Anyone else have this issue? If so what is a good solution?

I have this same problem

I have been frustrated with my roller furling for a couple of years, there are several issues that may or may not be related, and this is one of them. I tried to do some trouble-shooting this spring and so far I have had some limited improvements. I bought some teflon-based lubricant spray (the stuff the guys at the local boat shop recommended) and sprayed all of the moving parts on the upper and lower spinners. It works better now, but still sticks a little. That is to say, I don't have to craw forward anymore, but that last turn still requires a little tug on the sheet. I also replaced the furler line with something a little smaller, the line that it came with was getting bound in the drum, the new one still binds, but not as bad. I did not want to go much smaller than the original for fear it would slip down off the drum and get bound even worse. Another thing that might be adding to my woes is that it does not seem to furl tightly at the top. The bottom turns about four times before the top starts to turn. this causes some pretty bad creases in the sail and I think the creases complicate the "wont unfurl" problem. I have not figured out the ultimate solution, so far everything seems to make it a little better. I was hoping there was ONE thing that was wrong, maybe instead it is that everything is ten years old now. Good luck, john

Rolling Furling Jib

I actually just discovered this same problem last weekend. A buddy of mine that is an avid ocean sailor (taught at Annapolis Sailing School & sailed the world for 4 yrs. on a private 100ft. sailboat) recommended Sailkote for all things needing lubricant. I bought some but have not used it there yet. The Sailkote did work awesome on the snags I kept getting raising the mainsail up the mast. I actually have a bigger problem on my hands now! Has anyone had the line actually get pulled through the port hole & completely out on the other side? Any recommendations on getting back through, b/c I have been unsuccessful thus far. Thanks!

Fix for the line pulling through the port hole

Every Winter I store my boat after removing all of the lines, including the roller furling line. Each spring, I reinstall the furling line by running an electricians fish tape through the hole and then pulling the line bck through with the fish tape. It is a good thing to remove the line after a capsize or run through heavy weather also because water collects inside the tube and can create a mold/mildew problem with the line. To get the water out, I run the fish tape with a bit of paper towel attached. I change out the bit of paper towel until I make a pass where the towel comes out dry and then I reinstall the line.

Usa a Shop Vac

Place the hose of a Shop Vac near the hole on the furler side. Stick the line into the other end of the WHAM... The vacuum will suck it right through.

roller furling

I have had the same problem with the getting the jib to unfurl completely. It has been a source of frustration. I read on this site that the problem may be partially due to not having enough tension on the forestay. I plan to try tightening the shrouds this year, as I have been sailing as they were set by the dealer. I think they could stand to be tighter so will experiment this year.

Thanks, David.

I'll try increasing the tension this weekend and see what happens. Tim
