I have a 2004 170. Its my first sailboat and I've really enjoyed sailing it. I've had two problems, wondering if they are common. The first problem was repaired by my dealer roughly a year ago. Cracks developed in the hull where the mast attaches. They ran side to side at all 4 bolts. It appears at least one of them is coming back. Anyone had this? The second problem is in the deck under the rough traction strips. They have become soft and spongy. My dealer says that the foam underneath has deteriorated, probably due to heat. He said Hunter would not warranty it, but he has generously offered to fix it for me anyway. Any one else with this problem? Thanks for any feedback, Jim Durham, NC

Contact Lind Bayreuther at Hunter

Hi Jim, I suggested contacting Lind Bayreuther at Hunter (customerservice@huntercomposite.com or 860-739-3033) for any warranty or repair issues. I have found Lind to be a very reliable source of information. Lamar

Heat !

Jim, I own a 2004 as well and for the last several weeks here in sothern Calif. we have had record heat wave with temps at 115 for several days. although my 170 sits under a covered car port with those high temps I'm going to take a close look at her to night when I get home. Let us know how your repairs come out. the deealer that I bought my boat from has made some repairs to my hull as well, he did a good job. and has posted a couple of articles on making repairs to these hulls which feature his boat.dennis@sailing-obsession.com

Ck'ed okay :)

got home last night and went right to my 170, took a good look around and she appears okay. I also loosened my tie downs and boat winch to make sue there was no stress on her as she sits waiting.

Preliminary diagnosis

The 170 is at my dealer now. I had the boat stored under a plastic tarp. He thinks the heat buildup under the tarp may have caused my problem. If you store your boat this way you may want to check with your dealer or Hunter. I have not heard anything from Hunter directly yet. I'll let you know when I know more. Jim

Book says no tarp

They do mention in the so-called manual not to store it under a tarp. Or maybe they jsut want you to not store under a dark-colored one. I store it in the winter under a blue tarp, but that is under lots of tall tress, so gets only filtered winter sun. So far no cracks!!

Tarps

guess I should have read the manual a little closer. I was assuming that sun damage might be a problem, but I guess not. The heat problem is the softness in the deck/traction area. The crack is a different problem, that has been fixed once. It's not related to the heat as far as I know. Jim

hunter 170 problem

Hi Jim, My wife and i also have a 2004 Hunter 170. Really nice boat and fun to sail. We have also experienced cracks in the plastic spidering out from the bracket bolts that hold the mast in place. Our dealer fixed the cracks in 2005 and assured us that he had solved the problem. However, we just recently discovered 3 more cracks in the same area. Just dropped our boat off at the dealer yesterday for second round of repairs to same area. Wondering if any other's out there are having simuliar probs. Wondering if this is a structural design fault or are bolts simply to tight, as dealer suggested on our first repair. Whatever it is, sure am getting tired of 4 hour round trip drive to and from dealer to fix this problem! Best Regards, Norm Haliburton, Ontario
