Curious about the motor mount for the 170. Is this something I can install myself? I have struggled getting in and out of our protected launches and I am considering adding a small electric motor to help me out.

Not sure.

Kid, I am not sure if the motor mount can be installed easily or not. The boat I bought had it already installed. I'll be glad to post some pictures of how mine is on the boat, if you think that will help. Tim

Dealer Installed

I had the dealer install mine when new, but you could install it yourself pretty easily. It's just four screws and sealant. I think there is wood under the mounting area. I use a Minnkota 46 on mine and works for getting in and out of the marina. JerryA

Thanks

Jerry A and Tim, I appreciate the info. Especially the motor recommendation. Tim, do you have a motor on yours? I tried to avoid a motor, sticking strictly to the wind, but every mishap (minor marks and scratches on a new boat and way too close to the rocks a time or two) I have had since I picked up my boat would have been avoided if I had a little thrust through some of the pinching maneuvers I tried. Vigorous use of an oar saved me more than once. But, I am ready for a small, hopefully unobtrusive motor. The Kid

Motor

Kid, Yes my boat has a Honda 2HP 4 stroke on it. Where I sail it is impossible to sail without a motor (Strong currents and moving into and out of coves where the marina's are.) Let me know if you want me to post some pics. Tim

Easy Install

It's a very easy and straight forward install. I did it myself in under five minutes. The mount even comes with the instructions and sealant for the job. It gives you the exact measurements on where to install, and you just drill your pilot holes and then set the screws. The motor mount is definatly the weak link on these boats. There are three 170's at my marina that have had the motormount break loose. One guy lost his 2hp in the middle of the lake because it wasn't tied to a safety line. I've got a Nissan 2.6 hp and I love it. I had a 40lb thrust trolling motor on before that and I hated it, but there are a lot of others out there that love theirs. good luck on the install, and let us see pics when you get it done.

Motor mount

I drilled some holes in mine not all the way trough but just deep enough to set the Screws on the motor so the motor dont slip sideways when you turn. The plastic motor mount is pretty slippery.
