Hunter 170 Ventura, California
Last Friday I took a day off work to go sailing. I arrived at Ventura Marina at about 10:00 am and met club member Brian. In short order we had the 170 rigged and in the water. It was cold, overcast and misty at times, but we sailed out of the marina into the open waters of the Pacific. we had some chop, about a foot, just the very beginning stage of white caps, 8 to 10 mph winds on shore. Setting our sails the 170 quickly picks up speed and with the occassional spray comming off the bow, we set our course. Sailing in open waters is fun, you can set a course and hold it for miles on end. The sky tried to open up with the sun rays filtering through hitting the water miles ahead of us bring an emerald green appearnace to the water which all ways just seemed out of reach, Kind of fitting since Saturday was Saint Patricks Day ! After rounding the Mandolin Marker we headed north, the 170 really moving and healed over about 15-20 degrees with Brian and I on the rails. we held our course all the way back to the Ventura Harbor Marker and rounded that running down wind back into the marina, once inside the waters were calm and we easily tied up at the docks ending our sail. Sounds like a great sail

Glen, Sounds like you and Brian had a great sail! Wish I could have been there. The weather here is getting slowly better. Today is 72 but we have a cold front coming through with real high wind. Water temp still about 54. Hopefully we'll have good weather soon. I did mange to get my mast foamed this weekend. Took about 2 hours but was an easy job. How far out into the Pacific did you all get? Were you out of sight of land or did you hug the coast? Later, Tim

Off Shore

Glen and I were only about 1 mile off shore that day because the direction of the wind prevented us from getting much further off shore. If the wind had been right we would have gone off shore further to see if we could find some whales. I have had my 170 10 miles off shore on a perfect day, 12 knots of wind, small seas and the wind coming from the nw. Too much fun. But Glen and I had the 170 moving really well. If not for the chop we would have been planning. Glen drove the whole time so good job captain. Brian (now sailing a Hunter 23)

No St Paddy's Day sailing here...

Sounds fantastic!! And even better, now that I have seen the area and can really imagine what it is like to sail those waters. We NEVER sail in March!! And on St Patrick's Day, we normally march in the NYC parade...but we didn't even do that, since we had gotten a foot of snow by us, and our plowman didn't show!! Maybe next time, Glenn and Brian, maybe we'll get outside the marina!
