I installed a 1500 watt invereter in my 34h over the weekend to run the microwave and small appliances. My question is, the instructions requires grounding the inverter box for hardwiring. What should I ground too? I do not want to ground to negative of the battery system. I assume the ground is for the 110v side of the inverter so that you would not get shocked. Help !!!!

Additonal information wanted

Does a 34h have a sea ground for lightening? Should I separate the shore power ground from the boat ground being sea ground for lightening for the inverter?

grounding

tie it to your shore power ground, it should be the green wire.

Grounding

It is not grounded thru the green wire when away from shore power.

Your grounding, bonding and lightning should all be tied to one point that grounds to the water. The AC ground is one of these. The battery negitive is one of these. DO NOT ground the AC neutral!!!! Walt was right, the green wire on the inverter should be it's ground and should be tied to the other grounding. Look for a ground bus. Check to see that all these connection (above) occur there. If they don't they should. I hope the inverter you have installed is a marine inverter, also called an isolation inverter. This is a safe inverter for a boat. If it is not, it can be very dangerous. The isolation inverter isolates the hot and neutral to the shore side of the inverter. Ones that are not isolation inverters have the neutral connected to both sides of the inverter. Should something happen to your inverter, the potential for running direct AC through your DC system is possible. r.w.landau

how come you didn't get any instructions ?

When I installed mine it said within 3 feet of batteries, it also said to ground to the negative post on my battery switch, why didn't your's have instructions ???, and you better listen to the other guy, Landau, He's been there and knows.

additonal info

Alan, I am was assuming that this is a charging/inverter.I previously explained the AC side of a charging/ inverter. If it is just an inverter that produces 110 AC from DC, that ground should still be grounded to the ground bus. There should still be a ground to the outlet also. There are enough inverters out there that you should have the directions from your brand for installation. If it is not a charging inverter, I would use it on seperate outlets that are not connected to the shore power. Charging inverters sense shore power and switch to charge mode instead of an inverter mode when on shore power. r.w.landau
