Hello from a neophyte. I need to get a new genoa for my Pearson 303. I believe the old one is a 150 or larger. The sail plan does specify a 150, but I was wondering if anyone had experience with something less on this boat. I sail primarily in Buzzards Bay/Vineyard Sound and avoid 20+ knots if I can. The boat does have a furling system but I was told that furling ruins the sail shape anyway. Any recommendations or comments?

I have a 303 and like the 150% genoa. I have foam in the luff so that the sail maintains good shape when partially furled and I can use the sail in most wind conditions. I have used a smaller sail and upwind sailing in all but very light winds is OK but when off the wind I like the larger sail

If I was racing the boat I would have a 100 or 120% tall headsail and an asyetrical spinnaker.

I have a 110 (the smallest original sail of the P303). Great for 20-25 kts. After that need a reef in the main. My ideal sail would be a <140 for light air. That way I get 3 sec/mile PHRF if I race.

what size genoa depends on

Your sailing experience, Your age, How capable or timid your crew is . For example how quickly you can reef the main, Are you comfortable going up on deck to change down to a smaller jib on a typical buzzards bay smoky southwest summer afternoon. Ive got a P26w
and my last jib was a 150 but when it wore out a replaced it with a new 125.
I decided I didnt want to go up on deck any more to change a jib in a blow. With the 125 I might move a bit slower but I will never have to go up on deck to change jibs again. My reasons were my 71st birthday. Its your discision. But please bear in mind. If you opt for the 150 sooner or later your going to have to change down
