We have an A/B unit that is about 15 years old. It is still in the original box! If installed now, should it perform as new?

Halon Value?

That's a good question. Another question I'd have, since the refrigerant is Halon and it's worth quite a bit, is it possible to exchange it for a new unit? There probably isn't enough Halon in it to make it worth while but who knows, and there's no harm in asking.

I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work.

Mine is almost that old and still works very well. What have you got to lose? It should have been pre-charged from the factory with freon. I wouldn't recommend connecting the evaporator to the condensing unit to try it out, as each time you make the connection, you lose a little freon.

It should work,unless...

The system should work, assuming it hasn't been roughed up over the years. Dropped from a tall building, hit by a tow motor etc. It may need to be charged. The unconnected couplings could have leaked enough refrigerant to affect performance. If the caps and plugs on the couplings are tight, chances are it's fine.
