Big Joe

This young dude is sailing alone from Gibralter to the caribbean. His Dad is following behind him in an identical 28 foot retractable keel trailer boat. A "Tide 28". I think he is a pretty admirable kid for this although the Tide 28 ($75,000 U$) would not be my choice for this trip. It is not exactly robustly built. But what the hell do I know? Regards, Big Joe (Link to Tide 28 manufacturers site) http://www.tide28.com/

Sorry Franklin

Sorry, i went thru the different post titles and didn't see anything I thought related to this kids crossing. By the way, having Dad close by might make it easier but I wouldn't say this 14 year old is cheating. I wouldn't cross the Atlantic in that if his Dad was 2 mile away in another one of those. Regards, Big Joe.

Publicity stunt...

Taken from the Tide 28 website: "Peter Perham, Managing Director of Tide Marine Limited teamed up with Harley Racing Yachts on the Isle of Wight. The resultant Tide 28 is a fast offshore (RCD, Category 'B' rated) trailable yacht with impressive sailing performance and seaworthiness, which is very easy to rig, launch, sail and power along." The Daily Mail article names dad as Peter Perham, but doesn't say he's connected to the boat. Still impressive for a 14 year-old to do it. Even though help is a couple of miles away, how many Atlantic crossers have SSB and Satellite phones to chat away on (just like this kid is doing with VHF) and could get help in a hurry if needed? BTW, in England a chartered surveyer is a house surveyer, not marine, although since he's the MD of the company, one wonders about the broken shroud...

No biggy Big Joe

Funny thing though...a "B" rating is not Ocean crossing rating, that's an "A".
